This engine can be found in the Crosstrek Base and Premium trims, the latter adding an eight-speed manual mode with paddle shifters. 2.5L SUBARU BOXER Four-Cylinder

Re-tuned for the new model year, the 2.5L SUBARU BOXER direct-injection four-cylinder engine delivers 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque for a powerful, responsive drive. Like the 2.0L engine, the 2.5L is also paired with a Lineartronic CVT that adds an eight-speed manual mode with paddle shifters. This engine is standard on the Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trims. Similar to the 2.0L engine, you can enjoy impressive efficiency with an EPA-estimated 33 highway MPG.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek Engine Options

Three engine options are offered with the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek, mated to either a manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) if you prefer the convenience of an automatic. All three options connect to the efficient Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) system that sends power to all four wheels — continuously and concurrently — for optimal traction management, acceleration, and stability. 

Tow up to 1,500 pounds with the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek when it is equipped with either the 2.0L or 2.5L SUBARU BOXER gas-powered engines, or up to 1,000 pounds when equipped with the plug-in hybrid system.

2.0L SUBARU BOXER Four-Cylinder 

The standard engine equipped on the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Base and Premium trims is a 2.0L DOHC direct-injection aluminum-alloy four-cylinder engine that is mated to a six-speed manual transmission with incline start assist. You can also opt for a Lineartronic® CVT that features adaptive control, incline start assist, and eight-speed mode with paddle shifters for enhanced driver engagement. This engine produces 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque and delivers an EPA-rated fuel economy rating of 22 city and 29 highway MPG with the manual transmission or 28 city and 33 highway MPG with the CVT.

2.5L SUBARU BOXER Four-Cylinder

The 2023 Crosstrek Sport and Limited trims come equipped with a larger 2.5L DOHC direct-injection aluminum-alloy four-cylinder engine that is joined to the Lineartronic CVT. Power output increases to 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is EPA-rated at 27 city or 34 highway MPG.

X-MODE® technology has been added to the symmetrical AWD system on the Sport and Limited trims, to assist on hilly or less-than-smooth terrains by delivering extra power to maximize engine performance and traction control.

2.0L SUBARU BOXER Four-Cylinder Plug-in Hybrid

If gas-plus-electric power interests you, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid trim comes equipped with the 2.0L SUBARU BOXER engine combined with a permanent magnet AC synchronous motor for a plug-in hybrid alternative fuel source option. A Lineartronic CVT designed with planetary gears for lower power losses across stages also features adaptive control and incline start assist to help maximize engine and AWD efficiency. This engine also leverages Subaru StarDrive technology for enhanced power, acceleration, and fuel efficiency when you’re driving on busy city streets. 

Experience 137 horsepower and 134 pound-feet off torque, along with an EPA-estimated combined city/highway rating of up to 90 MPGe when using both gas and electric power. Charging time is five hours when using a 120-volt (Level 1) charger or approximately two hours with a 240-volt (Level 2) charger.

Engine & Model Availability

The 2.0L gas-powered engine is standard on the Base and Premium trims and is featured in combination with a single electric motor in the Hybrid trim powertrain. The Sport and Limited trims come equipped with the larger 2.5L gas-powered engine.
